Attention Honda Owners: Your recoil starter may be a source for engine damage!
What happens? The seal around the recoil starter allows dirt and debris to enter the recoil area. Once inside the mud can pass into the engine through the crankshaft seal damaging the engine and causing hundreds if not thousands of dollars of damage to the engine. This is one of the reasons that Honda states in their owners manuals that traversing more than 10" of water or mud will void the factory warranty.
Once the recoil area has become filled with mud, it is nearly impossible for the pull starter to work correctly. Field results show that if the starter rope will pull out, it will not coil again unless it is taken apart and properly cleaned. Furthermore, there is a good chance that when the rope is pulled out, it will also force the muck past the crankshaft seal. This leads to engine damage! Please note that this kit removes the recoil starter to fully seal the recoil area!
The replacement guard is a fully sealed guard that has a durable acrylic lense. This allows you to see if mud and debris has entered the recoil area and/or if your crankshaft seal is leaking oil. This area should normally be dry (product picture is filled with green water to demonstrate complete seal), but if its not, then you know you have problems.
